— Lucky
|
Lucky Swiftail[note 1], also commonly known as Lucky, is the titular protagonist of the Lucky's Tale franchise and the mascot of Playful Studios[6]. Lucky is currently voiced by Caitlyn Bairstow and designed by Nicholas Kole and Powerstation Studios.[1]
He was previously voiced by Debi Derryberry in Lucky's Tale. He was primarily designed by Derek LeBrun and Joey Dodd.
Lucky is a young, curious and courageous orange fox kit wearing a short blue cape and blue sneakers with white soles and laces.
Background
Lucky is the youngest of the Swiftail family and amongst the Guardian Order. He grew up in Foxington and was raised by Lyra after his brother and parents went missing when he was very young, and loves hearing Lyra's fantastic and inspiring tales of the Guardians, their Order, and their mission to protect the Book of Ages.[7]
Physical appearance
Lucky is a orange fox kit with a big head and tail for his cartoon-y appeal, wearing a blue cape and sneakers with white soles and laces with 2 strokes.
He has white fur patches on his paws, belly, and the tip of his tail. He has darker tips on both ears, a light orange outline in his eyes, and black pupils in-game but blue-purple-ish tinted pupils in cover art and other promotional material.
Development
In its early developments, after numerous prototypes and concepts for animal characters, including a squirrel, raccoon, and lemur. Lucky ultimately decided to be a fox, though his design would continue to receive tweaks before his final look was settled on. Mickey Mouse and Mario's characters were cited as key inspirations for Lucky’s design.
Lucky debuted in E3 2014 with an early prototype of Lucky's Tale for the Oculus Rift.[8]
Abilities
Lucky can double jump, burrow through dirt, and tail swipe enemies and flip switches, or a combination of the two moves in succession manipulated by the player. Lucky is quadruped when moving and goes bipedal when standing still. Besides in New Super Lucky's Tale, he can dash through floors, walks, and stands bipedally[9] and the overall control mechanic has changed drastically.[10]
Personality
According to Lyra in Super Lucky's Tale, Lucky is a carefree, young fox until Jinx and the Kitty Litter showed up. One trait that can be naturally inferred is his undying determination despite Lucky's minimal dialogue in the game, Lucky is a curious, sweet-natured, brave, and loyal fox with a positive attitude. While Lucky seems at first to be a silent protagonist, he does speak with Lyra openly, while remaining silent when interacting with others. Lucky seems to care for his brother Lucas, as he asks Lyra why she doesn't mention him when talking about their family uniting. It also goes without saying that he loves his sister Lyra very much, as he cries out for her when he is sucked into the Book of Ages and drops his guard when he sees what is her, and is overjoyed when they are reunited.
Lucky is curt to Jinx and the Kitty Litter, only voicing intense remarks to them before their boss fights. Tess notes when she subjects Lucky to her marble mazes that he seems to enjoy being challenged. Tess also finds his unrelenting smile to be "creepy", while others, such as Lady M, find him a nuisance.
Story
Lucky's Tale
Gathering from the game's prologue, epilogue, and chapter's description, Lucky and Piggy were playing along until Glorp took Piggy away from Lucky.
He left his hometown as his only objective is to find his companion, Piggy. Throughout his adventure, he was getting tired when he arrived at the forest yet he still resisted. Along the journey, Lucky found a Bubbleberry Bush, a special item which give him the ability to swim temporarily. While getting closer to finding Piggy, his fur is starting to singe due to an active volcano eruption. Eventually, Lucky found Glorp's lair and he has been ahold of Piggy this whole time; with Glorp defeated, Lucky and Piggy reunited at last.

New Super Lucky's Tale
When the evil sorcerer Jinx betrayed the other Guardians to claim the Book of Ages, and magically banished the majority to parts unknown, this included Lucky's parents.
When Jinx's Kitty Litter cornered the surviving Guardians, the Book of Ages reacted violently to Jinx's magic, either to protect them or to defend itself. Lucky, along with Jinx and the Kitty Litter, were trapped inside the book. Lucky would reclaim the pages of the book one by one, facing the Kitty Litter and making several friends along the way.
After Lucky reclaimed all the pages, he has to confront Jinx's castle, upon entering - Lucky finds his sister, who at first seems quite happy to see him, but then quickly takes the book. Lucky soon finds out that it was actually Jinx disguising himself as her to trick him into giving him the book. Worse, Jinx reveals that he had allowed Lucky to come this far so he would end up collecting the pages of the book for him. With the new complete Book of Ages and the magic in his Bedlam Boxes having absorbed enough energy, Jinx says he can now rewrite history - if he was able to beat Lucky.
After a harrowing final battle, Lucky reclaims the Book of Ages and gladly reunites with his sister. In Foxington, Lucky undergoes the Guardian Trials and becomes the youngest Guardian in history, blissfully unaware that his brother Lucas and Mittens stage a jailbreak for Jinx and the Kitty Litter.

- Lucky's birthday is on March 28, which is also the same date as the debut of Lucky's Tale.
- Lucky, in some ways, is somewhat similar to Mario:
- They're both platformers.
- They need to collect coins, upgrades, etc. to complete levels.
- They both have sinister enemies.
- They both can speak, but choose not to most of the time.
- When Lucky stands still, he looks at something close like an NPC, a small object or animal. Otherwise, Lucky will look at you when you pan the camera close to him.
- When Lucky is close to an edge (e.g., on a platform or a cliff), an animation shows Lucky peeking underneath and maintaining balance.
Notes
- ↑ Although his family name was spelled as "Swiftail" with a single T in New Super Lucky's Tale. His family name is spelled as "Swiftail" with double T's, with recent tweets on Lyra's concept photo, @PlayfulLucky's twitter bio, and on Playful's blog. It's kept spelled as a "Swiftail" keeping with what he's referred to in NSLT unless it has been updated in recent game installments or by Playful.
